A remarkable café in Sacramento is making a positive impact in the community. The cafe is none other than the Purple Tree Café, a business that is hiring and focusing on individuals with disabilities who often face challenges in finding employment opportunities.
Purple Tree Café background
Although the cafe was first established in 2018 with a stall at the Davis Farmer’s Market and community events, it wasn’t until April 2024 that it opened its first brick-and-mortar shop inside the prestigious UC Davis MIND Institute.
It’s a collaboration that has changed the lives of many, both employees and customers. This cafe’s impact goes beyond just providing a delicious cup of coffee; it also creates a sense of inclusivity and empowerment for those who are often marginalized in society.
One of the employees, Tynam Spalding, shares his appreciation for the job and how it has helped him with financial stability. He mentions that working at the Purple Tree Café is a blessing, as it’s more than a spot; it also values and celebrates diversity in its environment.
Being someone with functioning autism means he gets the help he needs for work tasks. Another staff member named Bea Bastino expresses her sense of belonging and authenticity in the workplace at the café. She mentioned feeling a sense of belonging in this environment because it allows us to truly be ourselves here.
This feeling of inclusion and approval can have an impact on people with disabilities by providing an environment where they can flourish and make valuable contributions to society.
Double the employment opportunities for those with disabilities and Autism
As Director and Operations Manager Kelsey Fortune puts it, the cafe has provided more than double the employment opportunities for those with disabilities, significantly changing her life and allowing her to witness the positive impact on employees’ lives.
Without this chance given by the nonprofit, these individuals may never have had the opportunity to succeed in a competitive job market. For more information about Purple Tree Café, visit here.
