Prestigious INSAR Award Recognizes Decades of Groundbreaking Work on Autism Subtypes
A respected researcher from UC Davis has been honored with one of the highest awards in autism science for his lifelong contributions to the field.
David Amaral, distinguished professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the UC Davis MIND Institute, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Autism Research (INSAR) at their 2026 conference in Prague this week.
The award honors scientists whose fundamental work has had a lasting impact on autism research. Amaral’s studies explore how differences in early brain development relate to autism. He combines brain imaging, long-term clinical studies, and animal models to help identify distinct subtypes of autism, with the goal of improving personalized support and interventions for children.
“It’s incredibly humbling to receive this award,” Amaral said. “We’ve made significant strides in our understanding of autism, and yet there is still much to learn. I’m honored to have played a role in advancing this critical field.”
Pioneering Long-Term Research at the MIND Institute
Amaral has been a leader in interdisciplinary autism research for decades. In 1998, he served as the founding research director of the UC Davis MIND Institute. In 2006, he launched the Autism Phenome Project, one of the world’s most comprehensive long-term studies aimed at identifying autism subtypes to better predict outcomes and tailor interventions for each child.
He also directs Autism BrainNet, a program that supports autism research through postmortem brain donations. Throughout his career, Amaral has published more than 360 scientific papers, been cited more than 96,000 times, and been elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2019.
The award was presented by Professor Christine Wu Nordahl, one of Amaral’s former trainees and a current colleague at the MIND Institute. Nordahl highlighted Amaral’s foundational role in creating INSAR 25 years ago.
Advancing Science to Improve Real-World Support
Amaral’s work continues to push autism research forward by bringing together experts from multiple fields. His efforts aim to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and toward a more precise, individualized understanding and care.
