Meet Elliot, one of the pioneers in creating a more inclusive educational environment for students with learning differences. In her early years, Ella was already showing signs of exceptional brilliance. For example, she skipped fifth grade entirely & still managed to excel. In college, however, she faced a different challenge; classes were no longer easy for her.
In her words, “I had a big crash and burn.” The challenge was due to her ADHD diagnosis, which made it hard for her to manage time and focus.
Inclusive education and support systems
Ella is a “Twice Exceptional” individual, a term used to describe those who exhibit exceptional intellectual abilities while also facing developmental or learning difficulties. Despite the challenges, Ella persevered and has now become an advocate for students like herself, paving the way for inclusive education and support systems.
In fact, her expertise in this area has led her to become a professor at the prestigious University of San Diego, where she will be leading the opening of the Center for Embodied Equity and Neurodiversity in August.
The center’s initiatives will focus on four main areas: providing training for K-12 teachers and supporting staff, equipping community college educators with necessary tools, addressing policy issues that impact neurodivergent students, and developing programs to ensure the success of these students in higher education and the workforce. This groundbreaking work is crucial in promoting a more inclusive society where ASD individuals of all abilities can thrive.
Other colleges and universities are also taking action.
Other colleges and universities are also taking action to create more inclusive environments for students with neurological differences, such as the task force at UC Berkeley that is dedicated to addressing issues related to healthcare, screenings, curriculum adjustments, and disability accommodations for both students and employees.
San Diego State University’s course on cognitive and social differences is specifically designed for neurodivergent students and those interested in fields such as social work, special education, or psychology.
This comprehensive class covers a range of topics, including executive functioning and time management, developing social cognition and contextual awareness, learning how to see things from another person’s perspective, communication and relationship skills, and self-advocacy strategies.
The efforts of institutions such as San Diego State University and UC Berkeley, along with the creation of centers like the Center for Embodied Equity and Neurodiversity, are more than just initiatives; they are significant steps towards building a more inclusive and equitable society.
