Some organizations just quietly do the work that changes lives without making a big fuss about it. This week, one of those groups in the Sacramento area got some well-deserved recognition. Meristem, a Fair Oaks program helping neurodiverse young adults, was named the 2026 Nonprofit of the Year for Assembly District 7 by Assemblyman Josh
California Governor Gavin Newsom has directed families and health professionals to the new West Coast Health Alliance for clear guidance on vaccines.
This move came after the Centers for Disease Control website updated its pages and now says, “The claim ‘vaccines do not cause autism’ is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism.”
Earlier on, before a few hundred CDC officials were fired, the website stated the vaccines had nothing to do with Autism.
In response to these federal pressures on the CDC, Governor Newsom established the West Coast Health Alliance, which he proposes to provide science-based information amid recent federal changes.
Newsom said Americans deserve public health advice based on evidence, not opinions. The alliance continues to follow decades of research from many countries showing vaccines are not linked to autism.
Officials stressed that autism is a complex condition involving genetics and environment, and focusing on one cause can confuse families.
West Coast Health Alliance Steps Up
The alliance formed after the Trump administration let go of many CDC scientists earlier this year.
It encourages families to rely on trusted doctors and medical groups for vaccine information. California health officials point to the strong evidence that vaccines safely prevent serious diseases while reminding parents to watch for mixed messages online.
