Tone Martinez knows firsthand the struggle of finding a stable job as an adult. He had been through multiple career changes before finally finding a perfect fit at the Purple Tree Cafe, a coffee shop located on the second floor of UC Davis’ MIND Institute.
Previously, Martinez had spent years selling tea and vegan bakes at the Davis Farmers Market before the cafe expanded to a brick-and-mortar location in April.
An Inclusive Workplace
But this is no ordinary cafe. The cafe is currently employing 19 out of its 21 staff members of diverse abilities, including those with with various mental, physical, and developmental disabilities. Martinez himself is on the autism spectrum and also battles social anxiety, making his job at Purple Tree Cafe a meaningful and valuable experience.
Martinez goes to great lengths, commuting by bus from Davis to fulfill his responsibilities of taking customer orders, heating up pastries, and cleaning tables for seven to nine hours every week. He appreciates the supportive and understanding work environment where he is surrounded by colleagues who share similar life experiences.
A positive and empowering work environment
In an interview, Martinez expressed his gratitude towards his co-workers and employers, stating that they have shown him patience and care in helping him overcome personal challenges. This compassionate and inclusive approach sets Purple Tree Cafe apart from other employers, creating an empowering workplace for all employees. Every month, the cafe hosts the popular “Davis Hootenanny” concert, bringing together both disabled and non-disabled community members at the nearby Delta of Venus restaurant.
As a testament to their commitment to fair wages, most employees are paid California’s minimum wage of $16 per hour, in addition to receiving tips. With the recent opening of a storefront for MIND Institute, there is an even greater demand for employment opportunities at Purple Tree Cafe. According to Kelsey Fortune, associate director, and operations manager, there is already a growing waitlist of potential employees eager to join this inclusive and supportive workplace.
Purple Tree Cafe is a shining example of the positive impact of inclusive employment on individuals and communities. By providing meaningful opportunities for young people like Martinez, they are not only creating a welcoming and supportive workplace but also fostering a culture of inclusivity and understanding within the community.
