Learning a second language has always seemed beneficial for travelers or people looking for new job opportunities, but it never occurred to most that it could also be a beneficial approach to treating autism.

Have you ever considered the surprising benefits of being bilingual in this aspect?

Recent Autism research on multilingualism

Recent research, headed by Uddin, a professor at the University of Miami, examined 116 children between the ages of 7 and 12. These children included 53 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 63 typically developing children. For comparison purposes, 21 of the children with ASD were multilingual, and 35 of the 63 typically developing children were also multilingual. The study aimed to investigate the potential impact of being bilingual on children with and without ASD.

Parents were asked to complete questionnaires to assess the children’s social cognition and executive functioning abilities. These questionnaires evaluated their child’s understanding of others’ perspectives and social communication skills.

The results were quite intriguing. The study found that multilingual children with ASD had better impulse control compared to those who only spoke one language. Multilingual children also showed better social communication skills, such as taking turns in conversation and understanding nonverbal cues, which was also observed in typically developing multilingual children.

Explanation

Researchers have tried to explain these findings by stating that being bilingual may enhance cognitive flexibility, which is switching between tasks. As far as Autism is concerned, this cognitive flexibility could help individuals with ASD to better adapt to social situations.

They also add that being bilingual may lead to a stronger awareness and understanding of different cultures and perspectives, which could be beneficial in developing empathy and communication skills. In short, it is good to be multi-lingual and it “naturally intervenes” in mental functions for individuals with ASD. This study has been published in the reputable journal Autism Research.
