How brain research is changing autism science

Professor David Amaral has been researching brain function and behavior for over twenty years since he joined the prestigious UC Davis as part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in 1995. With a background in neuroscience and psychology, Prof. Amaral has taken a keen interest in the brain and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Postmortem brain studies

One of the areas he has focused on extensively is autism, and according to his honest admission, there is still much to be understood about what is going on in the brains of Autistic. All he knows with accuracy at this point is that neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease have a better chance of being comprehended through postmortem brain studies, which have been going on for over a century now.

However, when it comes to autism research, little attention has been paid in that direction.

Following this concern, he and his team at the Simons Foundation launched Autism BrainNet, a program focused on collecting and preserving postmortem brains from both individuals with autism and non-autistic individuals. It’s accessible to scientists around the globe for further research and understanding of this complex disorder.

Blood sample analysis

Professor Amaral also states that through blood sample analysis, they have been able to identify approximately 200 genes that are linked to autism and can increase the risk of developing the disorder if mutated or not functioning properly. This promising progress in understanding the genetics of autism is just one step towards finding effective treatments and interventions for those affected by this condition.

Research and understanding of autism

Professor Amaral requested families consider the option of brain donation to continue brain research. He urges families to contact the organization’s 24/7 hotline, even in cases of imminent death. Upon contacting the hotline, the family or their clinician will be connected with the clinical staff, who will discuss and assess whether brain donation is a suitable option for further research and understanding of autism.

This collaboration between families and scientists has great potential for advancing our knowledge and finding effective solutions for individuals with autism.

Resources and effective treatments

At Sacramento ABA Therapy, we recognize the immense efforts of Professor Amaral and his team in advancing people’s understanding of autism. We are dedicated to supporting individuals with autism and their families by spreading awareness, advocating for resources, and providing effective treatments. Through collaboration with scientists like Professor Amaral, we hope to continue making strides towards a better understanding and improved quality of life for those affected by autism.

Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive world for individuals on the spectrum.  If you or someone you know is living with autism, know that there is support available, and we are here to help. Let’s work together towards a brighter future for all individuals with autism.
