Shop Class in Oak Park, Sacramento, has created a model for what inclusive education can be for neurodiverse children and young adults. It is much more than a shop class with machines and tools. Shop Class is a space that was built on the idea of creating an environment where children with ADHD, Autism Spectrum
Access to healthy living for many adult autistic individuals does not begin with the motivation or willpower to do so; it begins with access to safe spaces where they can be comfortable, as well as being understood.
Research indicates a wide gap in health between autistic adults and the rest of society; this includes limited opportunities to engage in physical activity in an inclusive manner, as well as a tragically short life expectancy. The gap is not due to an absence of interest or capability; it is due to an environment that was created without autistic individuals’ needs in mind.
Why Sensory-Friendly Fitness Spaces Matter for Autistic Adults
The typical gym can be very intimidating. Gyms are generally bright, play loud music, have many other people in close proximity, and often use unfamiliar equipment. Most gyms operate at a rapid pace, creating a stressful environment for those who wish to use the facility as a support tool rather than a source of stress.
An individual with some form of sensory sensitivity, in addition to being unable to perform some form of physical activity (i.e., exercise) as a result of the environment, may also believe that the environment is unsafe. If there is little to no opportunity for these individuals to be physically active, they will likely become increasingly sedentary over time, and the negative effects on both their physical and mental health will likely continue to increase.
The idea behind creating Autism Fit came from the desire to provide a space for individuals on the autism spectrum to engage in physical activity in a manner that respects who they are. The program, designed by autistic adults for autistic adults, provides a missing element: the ability to use your body in a way that respects who you are. The workouts are done at a slow, predictable pace, are clearly structured, and are sensory-friendly.
They are designed to be done at home, where many people feel most comfortable and in control. There is no pressure to perform, no expectation to move like anyone else, and no requirement to push past your limits.
Inclusive Exercise: There Is No One “Correct” Way to Work Out
The message underlying the purpose of Autism Fit is very clear: Everyone deserves an opportunity to exercise in a space that meets their needs. Movement does not have to appear a certain way to be considered “valid.” You don’t have to keep up with another person’s pace, strength, or form. You can modify, take breaks, repeat, or simply stop. Your body is free to move however it wishes.
Fitness isn’t just for strength and weight; it can be used for emotional control, reduced anxiety, improved sleep, connection to your body, and a sense of grounding. Many autistic people report feeling calmer and more connected to their bodies with a regular, low-key, and predictable type of movement.
Another key element of Autism Fit is accessibility. Once out of school, many autistic individuals have lost access to planned physical activities (through Physical Education classes) or other school-based services. The primary advantage of using Autism Fit is that it is available at no cost and can be done from home, at times when you have the time and energy.
Accessible Fitness Program for Autistic Adults After School Years
If you feel hesitant about trying something new, that hesitation makes sense. New experiences can be uncomfortable, especially when past environments have not felt welcoming. Autism Fit invites you to try without pressure. You do not have to do it “right.” You only have to show up in the way that feels possible for you.
Movement belongs to everyone. Strength belongs to everyone. And fitness, when done with compassion, belongs to the autistic community too.
