April marks National Autism Acceptance Month, first recognized by President Reagan 36 years ago. Its focus has evolved to promote respect, debunk stigmas, and celebrate the unique talents of individuals on the autism spectrum. As per APA, autistic traits may be noticed by caregivers or pediatricians before age one. As the child grows, behavior becomes more apparent in social settings.
One parent, Asia Bailey, even gives an example through her experience. Her son Nasir’s had behavioral differences at age four. He never engaged with others, and had scripted communication. After Nasir’s autism diagnosis this year, his mother has had a lot more peace at heart knowing his differences.
The Necessity of Pediatric
In the past, there has been a scarcity of information on autism available to pediatric healthcare professionals and researchers. However, the latest edition of our publication titled “Managing Autism in Children ” seeks to address this issue by showcasing five articles penned by faculty members.
In the information-pack, is a contribution from Dr. Roma Vasa, Director of Psychiatric Services at Kennedy Krieger’s Center for Autism Services, Science and Innovation (CASSI). She emphasizes the crucial role pediatricians play in managing autism, as signs often appear during early developmental stages. Routine check-ups allow for monitoring of milestones and addressing any concerns from parents.
This collection serves as a tool for individuals involved in the care of children and teenagers with autism meeting a requirement, within this area.
Autism early signs
Dr Vasa Explains that one of the early symptoms of Autism is the impairment in both social communication and restrictive and repetitive interests. This means that individuals with Autism may have difficulty connecting with others and understanding social relationships, as well as displaying certain behavioral features that are commonly associated with the condition.
ASD individuals are at a higher risk for medical issues such as seizures, gastrointestinal problems, and mental health conditions. This explains why pediatricians have a crucial role in managing the health of children and youth with autism, as they are knowledgeable in both the affected areas of functioning and overall well-being. Pediatricians can identify these medical conditions and provide early intervention or refer patients to specialists who are better equipped to handle them.
