As you probably already know, there has been some announcement of plans to research the prevalence of autism on a national scale and find its cause by September. RFK Junior, the lawyer who has relentlessly advocated against Vaccines, recently said he was taken aback by Autism Rates and would like to see them officially investigated.
Today, more and more families are hearing the word “autism” for the first time. The numbers are rising—1 in 31 children now, according to the CDC—but each child is so much more than a number. They’re someone’s whole world. Some still get caught up in debates or confusion about what autism is. But for us parents, it’s not a theory—it’s real. And what our kids need most is love, support, and a community that truly sees them.
MIND Institute at UC Davis
What many people don’t realize is that when it comes to understanding and supporting autism, our region is leading the way. Right here in Sacramento, the MIND Institute at UC Davis has been working with children and families since the late ’90s. Every year, they see thousands of kids—more than 10,000 visits in total—to help families get clear answers.
There’s no simple blood test for autism. Instead, children undergo thoughtful, research-based evaluations to gain a deeper understanding of how their minds work. The team there doesn’t just guess—they take time, listen carefully, and use the latest science to help kids with all kinds of developmental needs.
Every child’s needs are unique
Also, it’s worth noting that Autism can look very different from one child to the next. Some children may require extensive daily support, while others are highly verbal and independent. Experts no longer use terms like “high” or “low” functioning, because every child’s needs are unique.
Some children speak a lot, while others speak very little. Some are highly sensitive, others more social than you’d expect. Science is still learning, but we know autism likely starts before birth. What causes it? There’s no single answer—age, environment, even genetics may play a part. What’s most important is seeing each child as unique, capable, and worthy of love and support, no matter where they are on the spectrum.
More kids are being diagnosed now, not because autism is new, but because we’re finally learning to see it more clearly and include those once overlooked.
One mom shared how working with children who face challenges changed her whole way of thinking—she now believes so much is possible with love and support. Others are helping too. Families like the Vismaras and Bernicks are opening doors for adults with autism, creating jobs that fit their strengths. Their sons, each unique, are showing us that with the proper support, meaningful, fulfilling work is truly within reach.
