CA grants dentists money to help special needs patients

Visiting a dentist’s office can seem a natural task for some individuals. Still, let’s consider the high-pitched drilling, bright fluorescent lights and uncomfortable poking and prodding. It may be an overwhelming experience for children who are hypersensitive to sounds, lights, and touch. This is particularly true for children diagnosed with Autism.

Proper Care for Autistic Children

Sometimes, these children require sedation during regular checkups or may need extra time to become comfortable with the dentist. In some cases, specialized equipment, such as wheelchair lifts, may be necessary to provide proper care.

Unfortunately, this level of care is not always available in many practices, making it difficult for Autistic children to receive the dental treatment they need.

More efforts must be made to accommodate those with special needs in private dentistry settings to improve accessibility and inclusivity. Furthermore, considering that patients are always expected to honor waiting lists, it becomes even more challenging for the parents.

Dental clinic grants

The state recently allocated $47.2 million to 13 dentists and specialized clinics to enhance dental care for individuals with developmental disabilities and other special needs. This funding aims to support providing high-quality dental services to those who may face barriers or challenges in accessing traditional dental care.

Among the recipients of this grant is Dr. Chambers, who plans to establish a new surgical center specifically catering to special needs patients. This center will feature eight new chairs and two modern surgical theaters, allowing for an estimated 2,100 people to be served annually. Patients from neighboring areas such as Arizona are expected to also benefit from the specialized services offered at this clinic.
